The Cataclysm of the Deadlands

The Rise of King Maltraxis and the Kingdom of Sunspire

The Kingdom of Sunspire was once the hub of the world, a beacon of unity, wealth, and cultural achievement. For centuries, its rulers maintained harmony and prosperity, serving as the central axis for diplomacy and trade across Sunspire. This golden era ended with the rise of King Maltraxis. Though charismatic and intelligent, Maltraxis’s ambition knew no bounds. Dissatisfied with the peaceful legacy of his predecessors, he sought to expand Sunspire’s influence and power to unprecedented heights. To achieve this, he delved into forbidden knowledge and dark magic. Maltraxis’s search for ultimate power led him to the Children of Ash, a secretive cult devoted to Asmodeus, Lord of the Nine Hells. They whispered promises of invincible armies and unparalleled dominion in exchange for a simple, though damning, price: the souls of his kingdom.

The Infernal Bargain (120 Years Ago)

King Maltraxis made his pact with Asmodeus, exchanging 100 years of prosperity and power for the souls of his people upon the bargain’s conclusion. With Asmodeus’s infernal aid, Sunspire flourished. Its armies became invincible, its lands fertile, and its cities—especially the capital, Sunspire—grew into marvels of grandeur and innovation. Sunspire’s influence expanded rapidly. Neighboring kingdoms, unable to resist its might, were absorbed into its growing domain. Though many nations resented Sunspire’s dominance, they could not deny its strength and prosperity. However, this gilded age was built on borrowed time.

The Collapse of the Bargain (20 Years Ago)

When the 100-year reign of King Maltraxis ended, Asmodeus returned to claim his prize. The skies above Sunspire darkened, and the earth trembled as infernal legions emerged to collect the souls pledged to the Nine Hells. Sunspire was transformed into the Tower of Damnation, a colossal, blackened spire that served as both a gateway to the Nine Hells and a grim monument to Maltraxis’s folly. The surrounding lands became the Deadlands, a cursed expanse of scorched earth, molten rivers, and infernal corruption. The once-prosperous kingdom of Sunspire was reduced to a wasteland, its people either consumed by the infernal forces or left to wander as broken survivors. Maltraxis himself met a grisly end, consumed by the very powers he had unleashed. The nations of Sunspire, once united by trade and diplomacy, now stood divided, unsure how to confront this new and existential threat.

The Infernal Invasion (20 Years Ago)

Asmodeus’s legions spread from the Deadlands, threatening to consume all of Sunspire. Infernal corruption seeped into neighboring regions, and twisted creatures roamed freely, leaving devastation in their wake. Faced with annihilation, the fractured nations of Sunspire set aside their differences and united. Each kingdom chose a champion to represent them in the fight against the infernal forces. These champions led the combined armies of Sunspire, striking back against Asmodeus’s legions with divine and mortal strength.

The Champions’ Victory

The final battle took place at the edge of the Deadlands. The champions, guided by divine intervention and unparalleled determination, pushed deep into the corrupted territory. They faced unimaginable horrors and overwhelming odds but succeeded in sealing the portal within the Tower of Damnation, severing Asmodeus’s direct connection to the mortal plane. Though the invasion was stopped, the cost was immense. Thousands perished, and the champions themselves were forever changed by the ordeal. The Deadlands remained corrupted and uninhabitable, and the Tower of Damnation stood as a chilling reminder of what ambition and greed could unleash.

Lingering Effects (Present Day)

The shadow of the Deadlands still looms over Sunspire: The Deadlands: A cursed region where infernal energy lingers, creating twisted creatures and hostile terrain. Few dare to venture near its borders.

Sunspire Ruins

The ruins of the former capital now surround the Tower of Damnation. Stories of treasure—and death—draw foolhardy adventurers to its depths.

Divided Opinions

The nations remain divided on how to deal with the Deadlands. Valeria advocates for studying the tower to prevent future calamities. Sylvara and Karak Thûl argue for leaving it untouched, fearing any interference could reignite Asmodeus’s influence. Mireholm and the Underdark view the tower as a symbol of mortal hubris, while the goblins and orcs see it as a challenge to conquer.
